The Miner’s Ghost has been spotted around town (as well as some fairly scary monsters) and there are a few chilling
shop window displays in the main street, which can only mean one thing—it’s festival time!
Cobar residents are embracing all things spooky as the Festival of the Miner’s Ghost enters full swing.
It kicked off on the weekend with the Girl Guides Golden Family Fun Kite Day, and last night the Cobar Arts Council’s art exhibition was officially opened.
A busy weekend of festival activities is planned, with something for everyone on the agenda.
The festival came about to celebrate local folklore that the Great Cobar Heritage Centre still houses the ghosts of workers from Cobar’s early mines.
The heritage centre was originally built as the administration offices for the Great Cobar Copper Mine in 1910.
Over the years there have been a number
of reports from people working and staying at the museum of a “presence”, especially in particular parts of the building.
Research revealed that one of the most “haunted” rooms was the former mine pay office.
In the past, community members have told stories of disgruntled miners lining up at the office to argue with the company about their pay.
