Local artworks on exhibition this week

Wednesday October 22, 2008

Art exhibition prize sponsor Burgess SUPA IGA’s Louise Machul and Clare Montgomery (who is exhibiting a number of works) checked out some of the art on display at the Cobar Arts Council’s Art Exhibition yesterday.

Works by artists in a range of mediums are on display this week at the Cobar Arts Council’s Outback Festival Art Competition and Exhibition at 11 Marshall Street (next door to The Cobar Weekly).

Local artists have contributed more than 60 works of art for the display which include watercolour, acrylic, charcoal, pencil, pastel and ink, along with leadlight, photography, cross stitch, lino cut prints, masks, sculptures, quilts, collages as well as large woodwork and steel projects.

The exhibition was officially opened last night by Outback Arts Regional Arts Development Officer Sam Newstead, who also handed out prizes to winners with the assistance of Louise Machul, representing major sponsor Burgess SUPA IGA.

Entries in this year’s junior section are up with 233 entries received.

The junior winners have been decided with prizes awarded to the young artists at last night’s official opening of the week-long exhibition.

Prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each section along with awards for Highly Commended and Encouragement.

Junior winners included: Jayde Symonds—1st K-2 artwork; Jack Kennedy—1st 5-6 artwork; Kerry Jones—1st 3-4 sculpture; Tara Wilkins, Emily Claxton and Cody Nelson—1st 5-12 posters about potato facts; Laura Barnes, Maddie Thomas, Atlanta Rorke and Mikaela Godson—1st 5-6 board games novelty section; Alec Brennan—1st 2-100 Mr or Mrs Potato Head creative designs; Hope Bennett—1st 3-4 photography; Samantha Hyde—1st 5-6 photography and Madeleine Retallick—1st 7-12 photography.

The People’s Choice exhibit will be voted by the public and the winner will be announced before the closing of the exhibition on Sunday.

Cobar Arts Council secretary Narelle Retallick said there is an “interesting variety” of works on display this year.

“We hope to see lots of people come through the doors to see for themselves the talent that many Cobar residents have,” she said.

“A lot of the kids especially had a fantastic time creating their works, and that shows in the entries.”
