If you travelled along Louth Road in the early hours of the morning last Wednesday you may have been dodging more than just wildlife on your way to work.
A group of 15 CSA Mine employees opted for two wheels instead of four on their journey to work last week as part of Cobar Management’s participation in the National Ride to Work Day.
CMPL’s environmental officer Tanya Huon said the Ride to Work participants met on the edge of town at 6.45am to complete the 15 kilometre journey.
“A volunteer support crew travelled with the riders who all successfully arrived at the CSA Mine in times varying between 25 to 40 minutes,” she said.
CSA Mine staff have calculated the health, cost and environmental benefits of the event were: Health benefits – a total of approximately 15,536 kilojoules (or 40 Tim Tams!) were burnt over the 15 km, averaging 246 calories per participant (equivalent to 2.6 Tim Tams each!); Cost savings – based on the average sedan, a total petrol cost saving of $84.20, or $5.60 per person was saved by burning energy rather than fuel and money; Environmental benefits – a total of 1,350kg of tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions were not released by removing 15 cars off the road for just one day.
A nice healthy lunch was provided by CMPL for all participants on the day to acknowledge their efforts.
“It is hoped this will become an annual event at the CSA Mine, which aims to encourage more people to park the car and take up riding to work on a more regular basis,” Ms Huon said.—contributed
