Score slumps after loss of wickets
Wednesday October 22, 2008
Cobar’s representative cricket team travelled to Narromine on Sunday for the first round of the Brewery Shield competition.
Three changes to the original selected team were required including the key loss of star all-rounder Doug North to the Macquarie Valley Council team.
Captain Phil Harley lost the toss and Cobar fielded first.
Narromine made a sizzling start to their innings scoring 38 runs from the first seven overs however with the loss of pinch hitter Tony Harding’s wicket for 30, some sense of normality returned to the game and Cobar went to the first drinks break restricting Narromine’s score to 2/55.
Narromine lost regular wickets in the second session of play including the loss of their captain Kale Bock for a well compiled 49.
With the loss of a further two quick wickets after the second drinks break Narromine had slumped to seven down for 121 and Cobar were in with a chance of wrapping up the Narromine tail for a reasonably small total.
That is until Mark Munro came to the crease and smashed the Cobar bowling attack around the ground for what turned out to be a quick fire match-winning score of 43.
Narromine finished with a total of 194 for the loss of nine wickets from their 50 overs.
The Cobar bowling attack toiled hard in the hot and steamy conditions with John Potter taking three wickets for 25 (which included eight wides) from his 10 overs.
Phil Harley took 3/31 from his 10 overs, Mal Hillier continued his good early season form with the ball taking 2/9 from five overs and Damien Harbison took 1/32 from nine overs.
Stewart Fraser (0/49 from six overs) and Craig Dillon (0/23 from four overs) felt the brunt of the Narromine Batsmen although it must be said that Fraser bowled without luck beating the outside edge of Munro’s bat on a least a dozen occasions.
Cobar commenced their innings in a cautious fashion and shortly after the first drinks break had slumped to a score of 58 for the loss of five wickets after top scorer Dillon, was unfortunately run out (for the second straight day) for 44.
Fraser and Stephen Nicholson came together to try and resurrect the position.
A partnership of 33 took the score to 91 before Nicholson was the sixth wicket to fall.
Fraser was seeing the ball as big as a football and looked like he was going to continue his big scoring start to this season.
However, with his score at 39, he missed a full toss going down the leg side that rebounded off his pads and onto the stumps.
The Cobar innings finished with a score of 124 after 33 overs.
They were ahead of the Narromine score at the same period but unfortunately had lost too many wickets.
Munro completed a man-of-the-match performance backing up his batting by taking six wickets for 34 from 10 overs.
The pressure is now on Cobar to win their remaining two matches against Dubbo and Wellington if they are to make the Brewery Shield semifinals.
Cobar’s next representative match is the first round of the statewide VB Country Plate knockout competition to be played in a fortnight.
Their opposition is yet to be finalised with Cobar to play the winner
of a qualifying match between Gilgandra and
Walgett.—contributed
