Council takes tough stance on water restrictions
Wednesday December 23, 2009
The Cobar Shire Council staff has been directed by general manager Ray Smith to report any breaches by local residents of the current water restrictions.
“Water restrictions will be strictly enforced,” Mr Smith told The Cobar Weekly on Monday.
Council has received reports of a number of households who are ignoring the current restrictions and watering their lawns outside the hours permitted.
“Breaches of these restrictions will incur penalties,” Mr Smith said.
“If residents ignore the current restrictions, council will be forced to introduce tougher restrictions to ensure the sustainability of the town’s water supply.”
The following restrictions are current for Cobar and Nymagee: Hand-held hoses, fixed sprinklers, irrigation systems etc are permitted 6pm to 8am daily.
Car washing is not permitted on hard surfaces.
Euabalong and Euabalong West have more severe restrictions with all fixed sprinklers, irrigation systems, etc banned.
Hand-held hoses are only permitted between 6pm and 10pm daily.
According to council’s website, Cobar has a normal town allocation of 1,850 megalitres of water a year which is supplemented with rainfall.
“Even though we have been guaranteed a 100 per cent water allocation up to June, it could be a different story after that,” Mr Smith said.
