Top achiever: Hannah Jermyn with the Dior inspired garment she made as part of her major work that earned her first place in this year’s HSC in Design and Technology .
For Cobar girl Hannah Jermyn ‘the world is her oyster’ after she achieved a first place in Design and Technology (D&T) in the 2009 Higher School Certificate (HSC).
The 18 year old has attended the Presbyterian Ladies College (PLC) in Armidale for the past four years and this year sat her HSC.
Her mark of 97 was the best in D&T in the state with her achievement acknowledged at an award ceremony last Tuesday in Sydney.
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally and Minister for Education and Training Verity Firth personally congratulated Hannah at the award ceremony along with 118 other outstanding students who achieved first place in HSC courses this year.
“Regardless of where you live or what school you attend, the HSC provides a real opportunity for students from all walks of life to achieve,” Mrs Keneally said.
Hannah’s D&T major work was based on the history of fashion and clothing with particular emphasis on designers Christian Dior and Coco Chanel.
“I like the 1950s era. I’ve always been interested in sewing and craft,” she said.
Her volume of work included two stunning garments and a very extensive written and visual portfolio which will form part of a regional exhibition that will be shown in Tamworth in June 2010.
Hannah also achieved well in her five other HSC subjects which included English extension and Business Studies. She plans to spend a ‘gap year’ working overseas in Edinburgh
before returning to further study in Australia.
