Water board to go ahead with plans for new storage
Wednesday February 24, 2010
Cobar’s water storage capacity will be increased with a new facility to be built.
The Cobar Water Board resolved at an
extraordinary meeting earlier this month to construct a new facility providing an
additional 380 megalitres of storage for the town.
Cobar Water Board president Werner Muhlethaler said the new storage facility will cost around $770,000.
“The NSW Office of Water has agreed to contribute up to 50 per cent of the cost of this project given the significant need to provide a sustainable water supply for the future of Cobar,” Mr Muhlethaler said.
The remainder of the cost of the storage facility will be funded by the Cobar Water Board.
The new facility will take Cobar’s total water storage capacity to almost 1,100 megalitres.
The board includes representatives from Cobar Shire Council and local mines, and is responsible for the transmission of Cobar’s water supply to town. The board is currently involved in discussions regarding the Albert Priest Channel, with proposals put forward by a number of parties for future plans for the channel including the potential for a pipeline to be built in its place.
