Ray Smith to take up new appointment

Wednesday March 24, 2010

After four and a half years with Cobar Shire Council, general manager Ray Smith will take up a new appointment with Bland Shire Council at West Wyalong in May.
Bland Shire Council Mayor Tony Lord said the councillors were extremely impressed with Mr Smith’s reputation and experience and that he would be most suited to the position and would work well with Bland’s councillors, staff and community.
Mr Smith said he had “thoroughly enjoyed” living and working in Cobar and hoped that he was leaving Cobar Shire Council “in slightly better shape” than when he arrived.
He said during his time as Cobar Shire’s GM he was pleased to see the refurbishment of the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool, the installation of lights at Ward Oval and the construction of Pioneer Estate, which at times had been “controversial”, however it had provided council with a long term income.
He said he would be disappointed not to see the finish of the main street project however he hoped that the Stage 1 works would be complete before he leaves.
Mr Smith said he was also pleased with a number of internal improvements to council including a review of the organisation structure and the implementation of new polices.
“I think I’ve had a positive influence on the culture of council,” he said.
Mr Smith said he would miss Cobar especially the many wonderful people he has met over the past four and a half years.
“I am very impressed with the community spirit here in Cobar. It’s something you don’t find in larger regional areas or cities.”
