The Cobar Old Boys rugby league team played Nyngan in a curtain raiser to the First Grade game in the Tooheys New Group 11 competition on Saturday in Nyngan and the Old Roosters came home winners 14-10.
Playing a 10-a-side game with modified rules, Cobar’s Old Boys were led by the evergreen ‘Gandy’ Gordon who topped the tackle count and hit-ups.
He had good support from Brian Morris, Brian Prendergast, Jim ‘Nookie’ Russel and ‘Iron Man’ Ian Prendergast (who played three games and would have played four if he was young enough).
Good ball movement along the backline made for three outstanding tries to Geoff Potter, Mal Hillier and Glenn Spinks.
The Old Boys winning must have given the First Grade side some encouragement as they were very committed and unlucky to be beaten in the last couple of minutes against a very good Nyngan team.
Cobar’s First Grade side went down to Nyngan 34-29.
Cobar’s tries were scored by Peter Ford (3), Chris Gilbert (1) and Ray Ebsworth (1) while Stephen Ford kicked four goals as well as a field goal.
In Reserve Grade, Nyngan had a convincing 30-8 win over Cobar but the tables were turned in the Under 18 match with Cobar defeating Nyngan 34-8.
An Old Boys re-match will be played in the second round of the competition when Cobar hosts Nyngan at Tom Knight Memorial in August.—contributed
