Capital works at the Cobar Shire Council-owned dental surgery will go ahead after a funding application was successful.
Council’s acting general manager Wally Black said negotiations are still underway with a number of groups regarding the lease of the centre and a new dentist to practice in town.
The surgery has been earmarked for maintenance repair work which will now go ahead with the funding, and also allow the purchase of new IT and dental equipment for the surgery.
Council was awarded $147,552 under the Federal Government’s National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure program.
Minister for Rural and Regional Health Warren Snowdon said the grant application process is “highly competitive”.
“Each project aimed to improve rural and regional access to essential health infrastructure and equipment,” Mr Snowdon said.
Federal Member for Calare John Cobb has welcomed the funding announcement.
“Cobar’s funding will assist the council to provide further upgrades to the local dental surgery and provide an incoming dentist with modern equipment,” Mr Cobb said.
Under the funding program, the Outback Division of General Practice, which runs the Cobar Primary Health Care Centre, also received funding.
The Bourke based office was granted $166,100 to purchase office and specialist equipment as well as property and a vehicle to house portable equipment.
“The Outback Division of General Practice has been instrumental in providing medical services to the whole of western NSW and I commend them on their work and their success in obtaining this much needed funding,” Mr Cobb said.
