Construction of new taxi rank begins

Wednesday June 24, 2009

Locals waiting to catch a taxi will soon be able to do so in comfort with the construction of a 10m long, 6m wide shelter structure currently underway.

The new taxi rank was funded under the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants program.

Cobar Shire Council’s special projects officer Angela Shepherd said the taxi rank will cover 4m of road and 2m of footpath area near the corner of Marshall and Linsley streets, where the old taxi rank was located.

The new rank is not part of the main street beautification project, with council taking control of the construction.

“We were originally going to replace the taxi rank as part of the beautification program, but following community feedback there was a call for something much bigger.

“As a result we put in for some extra grant money to build the bigger taxi rank and we were successful,” Ms Shepherd said.

Council was awarded approximately $43,000 to build the rank, which includes the shelter and a 4.5m long seat.

“The new taxi rank will make it much easier for disabled access to taxis, with a smooth slope from the gutter area to where the taxis park,” Ms Shepherd explained.

“The taxis will drive up onto the concrete area off the road.”

The shelter structure is expected to arrive in Cobar next week.

Due to the size of the structure, the footings for the support poles will be located 2.2m below the surface.

Ms Shepherd said once complete, Cobar’s new taxi stand will be similar to ones in towns like Dubbo, Bourke and Narrandera.
