Ward Oval will be lit up like never before with the installation of new 36m high metal halide lights last week.
The new lights are capable of illuminating the entire oval to a degree that will allow night cricket matches, among other things.
Cobar Shire Council’s special projects officer Angela Shepherd said the four massive light poles contain between 12-18 individual metal halide lights each, with a total of 65 lights to shine down on the oval.
The lights feature state of the art technology to “reduce spill and glare”, meaning they are designed to have minimal effect on nearby residential areas.
“The lighting all meets Australian Standards.
“The wiring for the lights is all on the inside of the galvanised poles, so it’s all safe,” Ms Shepherd said.
She said the lights have two separate brightness settings which can be adjusted to suit their use.
“They can be turned on to the brighter setting for things like night cricket, and for other sports like Little Athletics, touch football or for the AFL training they can use the lower setting,” Ms Shepherd said.
“They are much more energy efficient than the old lights that were there.”
The installation of the lights is being combined with a complete power upgrade for Ward Oval, which will allow future development at the site.
“It will allow for lighting to be installed at the netball courts, as well as any future plans for a new pavilion or more lighting near the stable area,” Ms Shepherd said.
Funding of $121,000 was provided for the lights by the Department of Sport and Recreation, while council matched the funding amount.
Further money for the project was allocated from the Federal Government’s Rural and Local Community Infrastructure Program funding. Ms Shepherd said Ward Oval will be reopened this weekend.
