Three projects to receive funding

Wednesday December 24, 2008

Cobar Shire Council has chosen three separate projects to benefit from Federal government funds announced recently.

A power upgrade at Ward Oval, a new pump station to service sewerage systems in the Industrial area, and maintenance upgrades to council owned buildings will go ahead with the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Programme (RLCIP) funding.

Cobar Shire Council received a total of $422,000 under the programme.

The Ward Oval power upgrade has been allocated $245,000, and council’s general manager Ray Smith said it is an essential project.

“No future developments are possible at Ward Oval with the current power supply.

“The upgrade of the power at Ward Oval will provide sufficient power capabilities for further development at this location well into the future,” Mr Smith said in a report to council.

He said possible projects which could benefit in the future from the lighting upgrade include a new multi-purpose pavilion, lighting of the netball courts and lighting of Ward Oval number 2.

A further $100,000 of the RLCIP funding has also been allocated towards helping future developments in Cobar.

Council will use the money to install a new prefabricated pump station in Cobar’s industrial area.

“This project will provide essential infrastructure for the future sewering of the old industrial area as well as for any future development in the vicinity of ‘The Salty’.

“The installation of the pipeline and rising main has already been allocated for in council’s current budget and the next stage is the construction of the actual pump station,” Mr Smith said.

The rest of the funding ($77,000) has been allocated to conservation works on a number of council buildings, including the museum, family day care building and cinema.
