In the last games of the senior cricket competition before the Christmas/New Year break played on Saturday at Ward Oval, Nymagee and GW Colts recorded easy wins to both go to the top of the points table.

In the RSL/GW Colts game, RSL won the toss and batted on the turf.

However, their two openers, Peter Neale and Scott Brown, failed to judge the slow nature of the wicket and were both out early to the bowling of Stephen Nicholson.

Geoff Potter and Clay Neale settled in and slowly started to get some runs flowing before David Watson came on and bowled both of them with well-flighted off-breaks.

He even out-foxed the “old fox’ himself, Glenn Spinks, who was well stumped by Craig Tanke.

Watson completely mesmerised the RSL batting to take 6/17 off seven overs.

This is probably the best bowling by a 15 year old in the Cobar competition and earned him well deserved man of the match points.

Paul Gauci hit his way to 21 before he was well caught by Dan Howard and RSL were bowled out for 74 off 30 overs.

Apart from Watson’s six wicket haul, Mal Hillier and Nicholson both picked up two wickets.

GW Colts opened the batting with their two “pinch-hitters’, Howard and Murray Robotham.

Robotham was soon out, bowled off an inside-edge but Howard knocked up a quick 22.

Stewart Fraser and Nicholson then combined to score the 75 runs for victory.

Fraser made 30 not out and Nicholson 16 not out.

Nymagee made easy work of Golf Club who batted first on the synthetic wicket at No.2 Oval.

After two overs Golf Club were looking steady with four runs on the board, 10 wickets intact and all was well with the world.

However, in true Golf Club style a spectacular collapse followed; five wickets fell in the next two overs without the addition of a single run.

Nymagee’s John Potter picked up three wickets in one over and Phil Harley two in another.

From 5/4 they progressed to be all out for 51.

G. Lee made 16 and Blake Collins 9.

Once again sundries top-scored with 17.

Bringing Peter ‘China’ Brien on for one over released the pressure for Golf Club and the last wicket pair put on 19 runs.

Harley took 3/12, Potter 3/13 and Craig Dillon 2/4. Golf Club was all out in 22 overs.

Nymagee knocked up the required runs in seven overs with the loss of Roger Mitchell for 19.

After the game, neither team took time to award man of the match or fielding points which means someone could miss out on an end of the year trophy because of that oversight.

The points table going into the break is: Nymagee 55, Colts 55, RSL 51, Atlas Copco/ Golfy 2 34 and Golf Club 27.—Wisden
