Cobar retailers could tap into state business funding

Wednesday February 25, 2009

New CSA Mine manager Rubens de Figueirdo
Department of State and Regional Development (DSRD) representatives Barry Alstom and Chris Dennis met with local business owners Jillian Prince and Michelle Hush last Thursday to discuss funding options which are currently available to them.

Staff from the Department of State and Regional Development (DSRD) were in Cobar last Thursday to speak with local business owners about grant funding avail-able to them in the wake of the financial downturn.

Chris Dennis and Barry Alstom from the DSRD office in Dubbo met with more than a dozen Cobar business owners on Thursday to explain the DSRD’s Business Sustainability Program which has come in response to the financial crisis.

“We expect Cobar and Nyngan to be the two main areas who will use this program,” Mr Alstom said.

He said the Business Sustainability Program helps business to try and put a plan into place that will enable them to go forward and also offers them practical assistance before their businesses get to the stage of needing serious help.

“We want the business owners themselves to come up with ideas on what they will spend the funding on whether it be diversifying their business, training, new software or offering additional services.

“Everyone we spoke to today seems to be pretty worried,” Mr Alstom said.

“We have however had some very positive discussions with business owners who have some very good ideas on how they can get their businesses back on track,” Mr Dennis said.

Mr Dennis and Mr Alstom said they were happy to speak to any other Cobar businesses who want to know how they can access the grant funding.

They can be contacted at the Dubbo DSRD office.
