Council questions Western Division future at meeting

Wednesday February 25, 2009

Cobar will lead the push to force the Western Division of the Shires Association to question its future at next week’s annual conference of the lobby organisation.

A number of Cobar Shire councillors will attend the conference in Balranald from Sunday.

Cobar Shire Council has put forward a motion calling for a definitive answer on the western division to be made at the confer-ence.

The motion comes after concerns were raised by Cobar councillors about the effectiveness of the group, with member councils asked to provide funding for a strategic busi-ness plan for the group.

“Unless there is 100 per cent support for the division moving forward then it would be more appropriate to disband the Western Divi-sion and for each council to focus on its own division within the Shires Association,” Cobar’s motion says.

Cobar will also put forward a number of other motions to the conference, including calling on regional support for the sealing of the Ivanhoe Road (also known as The Wool Track project).

Council has requested the Western Division member council provide letters of support for the federal government to provide Auslink funding for the project.

Also on the agenda at the conference is air services in the western region, with Cobar Shire Council putting forward a motion to encourage the Local Government and Shires Association to lobby the NSW State Government on behalf of the communities affected by the withdrawal of Rex Airlines services.

Other motions put forward by Cobar Shire Council include a call for support for a proposal for a weather watch radar to be located at Cobar; and opposition to a new proposed local government building certifiers accredita-tion scheme.
