Minister for Community Services Linda Burney visited Cobar last week as part of a tour of the far western region of NSW.
Ms Burney took some time to have an unofficial talk with around 30 youth involved in a leadership program with the Murdi Paaki Regional Assembly when it met in Cobar last Wednesday afternoon.
While in Cobar, she also visited the Cobar Community Services Centre in Marshall Street.
Ms Burney spoke with youth about the leadership program, as well as giving a talk about her own background.
Ms Burney’s media advisor Phyllis Sakinofsky said she emphasised to the youth that they “can achieve what they want”.
“She also spoke about the importance of good reading skills, as well as qualities like loyalty and compassion.
“She told them about what she does as a minister and spoke about parliament,” Ms Sakinofsky said.
As part of her three-day tour Ms Burney visited Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Dareton, where she officially opened the new Community Services Centre in the town.
She met with councils and community service workers in the towns, and toured an Aboriginal Health Centre in Broken Hill.
