Community members get behind town clean up effort

Wednesday March 25, 2009

Clean up Australia Day
Emily Carswell, Jayde Roberts, Konnar Martin, Liam Richardson and Shaun Richardson were among the volunteers who helped clean up seven truckloads of rubbish from Sunset Drive and Wilcannia Road for Cobar’s Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday.

Seven truckloads of rubbish and green waste was removed from Sunset Drive and part of the Wilcannia Road by 45 keen volunteers at Cobar’s Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday.

The volunteers included community members as well as Cadets, Scouts and Cubs, Cobar State Emergency Service members and members of the Cobar High School Environment Club.

Local clean up coordinator Cr Greg Martin said he was pleased with the effort of everyone involved.

“It was good to see the community spirit is still out there.

“There was a full truck load of rubbish collected on Sunset Drive and Wilcannia Road.

“There was another six truck loads of branches and shrubs from Sunset Drive,” Cr Martin said.

He said the clean up was the first part of what is hoped to be a revamp of the area.

“More work is planned to re-establish an avenue of trees down Sunset Drive to the cemetery,” Cr Martin said.

The cooler morning temperature and maximum on the day of 34 degrees justified the decision to hold Cobar’s Clean Up Australia Day three weeks later than the national day, which is traditionally the first Sunday in March.

Volunteers who participated in the clean up were treated to a free barbecue, provided by Telstra, at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.
