Tourism on the rise in Cobar with best figures ever
Wednesday November 25, 2009
The global financial crisis has failed to put a dent in visitor numbers to Cobar, with the Great Cobar Heritage Centre reporting its busiest year ever.
Cobar tourism manager John Martin said there has been a steady increase in visitors to the centre over the past five years, with more than 5,600 passing through the museum and more than 17,800 at the Visitor Information Centre.
However the number of visitors to town is expected to be even higher, with research by Tourism NSW indicating that less than 20 per cent of tourists use Visitor Information Centres on a regular basis.
The figures, which show the total number recorded visitors to Cobar in the past year was 24,363, is well up on last year where 22,939 people visited.
The figures are a major improvement on five years ago, where around 20,000 people were visiting Cobar.
The figures are also in direct contrast to most other regions in Australia, where a decline in domestic tourism was recorded this year.
Mr Martin said Tourism NSW and Australian Bureau of Statistics figures value Cobar’s annual tourism industry at $17million.
Cobar Tourism Advisory Committee will meet tonight, with the main items on the agenda to include a wrap up of the 2009 Festival of the Miner’s Ghost and plans for the 2010 Australia Day celebrations.
