Nymagee still unbeaten this season

Wednesday November 25, 2009

Despite heroic efforts by Ox Colts’ young team member Mark Fraser and evergreen player Mal Hillier in their match against Nymagee on Saturday, the defending premiers Nymagee, retaining their unbeaten status this season with a comfortable win over the Ox Colts.

Nymagee captain Jade Buckman won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first despite the wicket having a greenish top.

Buckman may have been questioning his decision after losing the early wickets of Roger Mitchell and himself (both dismissed for ducks) in Stewart Fraser’s second over.

However inform batsman Phil Harley joined Doug North at the crease and together they began to build the innings with a partnership of 75.

That was until North was dismissed for 47 by a good catch from Stewart Fraser off his son Mark’s first ball.

Young Fraser is now calling North his ‘bunny’ after taking his wicket a couple of times over the last few seasons.

Matt Nicholson was then dismissed for a duck and Chris Barnett made a quick fire 19.

Harley was the last batsman out for the top score of 68 as Nymagee was all out for 155 in the 42nd over. Five Nymagee batsmen were dismissed for ducks.

Mark Fraser was Ox Colts’ best bowler taking five wickets for 21 runs from his six overs.

This was his first five wicket haul in senior cricket and was not a bad effort for a 13 year old playing against the undefeated leading team in the competition.

He was backed up by father Stewart who took 4/25 and Dan Howard who took 1/32 both from 10 overs.

After the tea break Ox Colts began their inning under lights and struggled against some tight line and length bowling from the Nymagee bowling attack.

They were eventually dismissed for a total of 88 from 30 overs.

Inform opener Hillier was the only Colts batsman to make double figures remaining not out on 37 with sundries the next top score on 24.

In the earlier first round match between these two teams, Hillier became the only batsman in the last 11 years to bat through an innings in Cobar cricket competitions.

By duplicating this rare event in the second round, Hillier has become the third person in the history of Cobar cricket to repeat this achievement twice in one season, the other two players being Dick McLean (Nymagee) in 1929/30 season and Peter Luffman (Tilpa) in the 1976/77 season.

Harley, reaffirming his position as one of Cobar’s leading all-rounders, was the best bowler in a devastating spell of 3/9 from seven overs including the prized wickets of Stewart Fraser for a duck and Stephen Nicholson for two.

Other wicket takers were Baden Smith (2/6), Wade Smith (2/9), Chris Barnett (1/7), Mitch Shields (1/33) and Doug North (1/10).

In the other match RSL Club was without the services of representative players Paul Gauci, Wade Potter and Peter Neale, however they still cruised to a comfortable win over the Golf Club team on the synthetic wicket at No. 2 Oval.

Golf Club won the toss and batted first however soon found themselves in early trouble losing three quick wickets for only six runs.

The middle order tried to resurrect the innings with Scott Toomey top scoring with 29, Rob Fing (17) and John Hausia (10).

Following their dismissals the Golf Club innings folded for a total of 98 with Steve Elder remaining not out on 10.

Best bowling figures for RSL Club were from Shane Munro who took the first four wickets of the innings for 24 runs.

He was ably supported by opening bowling partner Geoff Potter (1/18) before the spin twins of Glenn Spinks (3/30) and Clay Neale (2/8) finished off the Golf Club innings.

Spinks and Neale, showing their versatility, opened the RSL batting and took control of the match with a partnership of 74.

The loss of two quick wickets, including Neale for a match top score of 42, gave Golf Club a slim hope.

However Spinks, who remained 31 not out, saw RSL through to their second victory in a row. RSL finished at 2/99.

Elder was the only bowler for Golf Club to take wickets with 2/14.—contributed
