FWAS talent squad education program at Warren

Wednesday November 25, 2009

A number of Cobar Far West Academy of Sport (FWAS) athletes attended a talent squad education program at Warren over the weekend.

Attendees included staff and athletes from the Country Rugby League Academy Program, Netball, Football, Golf and Lone Star Programs, along with special guests from Warren Shire Council, Netball NSW, Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation and Communities NSW Sport and Recreation division.

Each squad announced their 2009 Athlete of the Year, selected by the FWAS coaching staff and all of the 2009 Athlete of the Month award winners were acknowledged with special plaques presented by Communities NSW Sport and Recreation representative Rebecca Neale.

Among the monthly winners were Cobar’s Wade Potter (March—Cricket Emerging Blues program) and Jeb Bishop (July—Golf NSW CHS Sand Greens Net winner).

As well as the award presentation, the talent squad education weekend featured several training activities that saw some 100 athletes work with their squad coaches and special guest presenters.

Barb Thomas from Curves in Forbes presented nutrition lectures, Scott Campbell from Tamworth assisted in Sports Testing, and elite athletics coach Ernie Sluiter worked with the squads on running technique and drills.

The 2010 Netball squad trials were also conducted over the weekend in Warren.

“Despite the incredibly hot weather, the academy education camp was a great success,” FWAS executive officer Kathy Barber said.—contributed
