Cobar Fire Brigade personnel and local police are reminding local families about the importance of fire safety after a lucky escape for one local family on the weekend.
A three year old child and his mother suffered only minor injuries and their home minimal damage after a house fire on Sunday.
Fire brigade personnel were called to the Yarran Circle residence at around 2.30pm where the loungeroom was on fire.
Senior Constable Adam Gibson said the child is believed to have started the fire after being left alone for a short period of time in the loungeroom of the home, with matches located near the fire area.
“The mother was alerted by the child that there was a fire, and found a large amount of smoke and flames coming from the carpet near where the child had been playing,” Senior Constable Gibson said.
He said the woman attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful.
The fire brigade attended a short time later and managed to contain the fire.
“Damage was sustained to a section of carpet in the loungeroom, and there is smoke damage to the ceiling of the room,” Senior Constable Gibson said.
The child was treated at the scene by paramedics for a minor burn to the finger, while the mother was treated for smoke inhalation.
Cobar Fire Brigade captain Colin Jones said the fire a is timely reminder for parents to ensure ignition items (such as matches or lighters) are not accessible to children.
“For older brothers and sisters, if you see a younger child playing with these items tell a responsible adult or call 000 if a fire has occurred and go to your home evacuation point.”
