Golfers battle windy weather for men’s closing day

Wednesday November 26, 2008

Junior cricket action
Battling the very windy conditions at the men’s closing golf day on Sunday were Movember supporters Tony Polack, Rob Josephson, Shane Carter and Don Heather.

The windy conditions over the weekend failed to deter too many of the men golfers with reasonable fields turning out to participate on Saturday and Sunday.

A field of 24 players contested the Red Earth Real Estate sponsored Mixed American event on Saturday with two true veterans, Bruce and Pat Mitchell, walking away with the prize money recording a fine 687/8 net score.

They were closely followed by Garry and Jannine Wilkin (69) and Cliff and Sue Wyllie (693/8).

Brad Bannister and Dave Knight recorded nearest the pins for the men and Janine Ryan, Gloria Hay, Sally Bannister and Pam Sikora hit one each for the ladies.

Sunday’s closing day round attracted 19 starters and when the final hooter went, Richard Maple with a 68 net, was declared the winner.

He was followed by Garry Hay (70) and Don Heather, also on 70.

Nearest the pins were recorded by Craig Jones, Peter Brien, Bruce Mitchell, Garry Hay and Max Phillips.

The welcome rain prevented any play for Wednesday’s competition.

This coming Saturday sees the annual Town versus Country match-up with the type of event still undecided due to Town Captain Mick Bannister still trying to figure out which event gives his team the best advantage.

Country Captain David ‘Ooze’ Knight doesn’t care which event Bannister selects as he is confident that the Bushies will be too strong once again.

A barbecue and refreshments will be on offer at the completion of the day’s play.

Sunday will be a stableford event. In conjunction with this event a play-off between the Monthly Medal winners to determine the Medal of Medals winner will be played.

The following players qualify for this play-off: Chris Powell, Garry Wilkin, Richard Maple, Bill Douglas, Jason Lawrence, John Collins, Tony Polack, Bob Baker and Michael Ryan.

After this weekend the Summer Competition will kick start. More information about starting times and format will be available next week.—Ernie
