Relief for Euabalong as water flows
Wednesday January 27, 2010
Euabalong and Euabalong West residents have had a reprieve from the villages’ dry outlook, with the state government releasing water into the Lachlan River.
Flows into the river from Wyangala Dam were stopped in October last year when the dam level fell to critical levels.
Cobar Shire Council was on standby to
begin carting water into the villages from Lake Cargelligo with fears the water
would run out completely before the end of January.
However rainfall over the Christmas and New Year period in the region not only boosted the Lachlan River, but also increased the level of Wyangala Dam from almost
as low as four per cent to just over six per cent.
NSW Minister for Water Phillip Costa announced last week the rainfall would allow the release of more than 20,000 megalitres of water from the dam.
“This release of water will provide an opportunity for landholders in the lower Lachlan, who have not had access to river water for some months, to fill stock and house tanks, which should last until winter,” Mr Costa said.
“This release will renew the flow of the Lachlan River which has run dry in the lower parts in recent months,” he said.
Euabalong and Euabalong West residents will remain on tight water restrictions, banning all fixed sprinklers, for the near future however council will investigate how much water flows onto the villages before relaxing the restrictions.
