The Red Earthlings women’s basketball team (sponsored by Red Earth Real Estate) of Brittany Fugar, Cheryl Peatey, Renee Matheson, Tanya Huon, Jemma McKenzie and Shae Martin were the winners of the grand final match played on Monday night at the Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre.

The Red Earthlings are the winners of the women’s basketball competition after they defeated the Pink Ladies 26-16 in the grand final on Monday night at the youth centre.

The match was a repeat of last year’s grand final in which the two teams met and, once again, it ended in a win for Red Earthlings.

And as she did last year, Red Earthlings’ Renee Matheson was once again Player of the Grand Final.

Matheson dominated under both baskets top scoring for her side with 12 points.

She also racked up a huge rebound count during the match which made all the difference, giving her side more opportunities to sink baskets.

Pink Ladies went into Monday night’s grand final as the favourites after finishing the season as minor premiers.

The match started on an even keel with Pink Ladies scoring first points after a strong run to the basket by Demi Smith.

Brittany Fugar quickly replied for Red Earthlings and then the teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the first quarter.

Fugar, along with Matheson and Tanya Huon, headed up the Red Earthlings attack.

Both teams recorded a high foul count for the first half of the very physical match and the big crowd of spectators was treated to some fast and furious play as both teams tried to gain the ascendancy before the half time break.

Red Earthlings went into the break with a seven goals lead and by the third quarter they had extended it to an eight points margin.

The Pink Ladies continued to fight and, at one stage late in the match, had clawed their way back be within two goals.

Bianca Walsh contributed two great goals and Jada Parisi also added four points to the Pink Ladies total.

Red Earthlings however did not relinquish their hold on the match and powered home in the final minutes to win the match by 10 points, 26-16.
