A Blues blitz

Wednesday May 27, 2009

Netball winners
Cobar Blues A Grade netball defenders Demi Smith (second from left) and Amie Jacklin (second from right) made it tough for the Girral-West Wyalong shooters in their Northern Riverina League match on Saturday at Ward Oval.

The Cobar Blues netball squad completely overshadowed their Girral-West Wyalong opposition at Ward Oval on Saturday with both the A and B Grades sides recording confident wins in Round 6 of the Northern Riverina League competition.

The A Grade match had a scrappy start however by the end of the first quarter both sides had begun to settle into the game.

Cobar’s start of the second quarter was in direct contrast to their first and they powered on to led 22-11 at the half time break.

Demi Smith, who stepped up from B Grade, was equal to the A Grade’s Goal Keeper’s task and, along with Amie Jacklin, the pair worked hard in defence all game turning the ball over for their Blues attackers on numerous occasions.

Jaimee Cohen, in the Goal Attack position, was spot on and scored the lion’s share of goals for the Cobar side.

The Blues maintained their second quarter high intensity work rate for the remainder of the match and ran out easy winners, 47-29.

Smith’s top game scored her the Coach’s Award while Wing Attack Lisa Spinks was named Players’ Player.

Cobar B Grade’s 37-22 win on Saturday reinstated their top of the table status in the 2009 B Grade competition.

They laid down the law to their much younger Girral-West Wyalong opposition and, despite the inclusion of a couple of new players, the new B Grade side gelled well throughout the game.

The centre court combination of Brittany Fugar (Centre), Karleen Duell (Wing Attack) and Sarah Irvine (Wind Defence) played calm, controlled netball setting a good platform for their shooters with Nicole Snudden’s accurate shooting helping the Blues to an easy 15 goals win.

Amy McConville was invaluable in the Goal Defence position.

Snudden was named Players’ Player and also collected the Coach’s Award.
