Marking the occasion: Terry Pitkin running on for his 100th game for the Cobar Blues.
Club stalwart Terry Pitkin notched up 100 games on Saturday for the Cobar Blues AFL side in his 10 year career with the team.
The Blues veteran is only the second player in the club’s 16 year history to achieve the milestone with Blues captain Murray Robotham the only other Cobar player to do so.
And while his 100th game was a special occasion Pitkin didn’t vary his routine on Saturday. The 48 year old farmer from Hermidale arrived in his truck in his work clothes before getting kitted up to play his 100th game for Cobar.
Pitkin has played another 400 games earlier in his career with AFL teams in Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.
Highlights of his career with Cobar include winning the Best and Fairest title one season and also winning the goal kicking
trophy.
Pitkin has spent most of his 10 years playing with Cobar in the forwards, occasionally stepping into the ruckman position.
“He’s known and respected as a committed player who loves the game, who encourages and protects the younger players and can take a good grab when needed,“ Club President Daniel Howard said.
“I love the game, and the comradeship with the Cobar boys,” Pitkin said after Saturday’s game.
“My goal for the past two seasons has been to reach 100 games.”
And with the 2010 season now over for the Blues Pitkin said he hasn’t made up his mind about retirement yet.
“I’ll have a think about it in the off season but I reckon next year I’ll just be taking it week to week.”
While Pitkin doesn’t attend team training each week (he reckons he gets a good enough work out chasing goats on his property), his dedication to the game cannot be faulted.
He travels 125kms just to play home games not to mention away games with the club’s biggest trip to Barellan an 820km round trip.
And while the Blues unfortunately couldn’t give Pitkin a win in his 100th game, the occasion was marked with a 100 games banner and presentation by the club of a commemorative pewter mug.
