Prime TV makes digital switchover commitment
Wednesday July 28, 2010
Prime Television has made a commitment to stay in Cobar after the digital switchover.
Prime TV network news editor John Rudd told The Cobar Weekly the station is “committed to providing a digital service for Cobar”.
“It is our total and entire intention to continue broadcasting, and we intend to be there a very long time,” Mr Rudd said.
He also responded to a report in The Australian newspaper that the local news service would be completely based out of Canberra.
Mr Rudd explained that the newsreader would be based in Canberra, while Prime TV journalists would continue to be based in centres across the central west.
Currently Prime TV’s Dubbo-based journalist provides coverage of Cobar issues, and Mr Rudd said this will continue into the future.
He said reports the channel would “fall victim” to the digital switchover were “misunderstood”.
“This is not true,” Mr Rudd said.
“We are doing all we have to do for the digital switchover, which is mandated by the government, and this will all help to deliver a better service,” he said.
He said at this stage the timing of Cobar’s switchover to Prime’s digital channel has not been “locked down”.
Analogue broadcasts to Cobar are set to be switched off in 2012 according to the federal government’s digital switchover schedule.
Mr Rudd said Prime TV hopes to continue its commitment to Cobar for “a number of years”.
“Prime’s whole premise is as a regional broadcaster.”
