Cobar Enterprise Facilitator Mark Workman, Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries and Cobar Entertainment Centre proprietor Alix Schaefer met to discuss the local business last week.
State Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries will be taking one of Cobar’s new business success stories and using it as an example to other towns in his electorate.
Mr Humphries met with Cobar Entertainment Centre proprietor Alix Schaefer and Enterprise Facilitator Mark Workman last week to discuss how the business got off the ground.
A former employee of the Cobar Cinema, Mr Schaefer told Mr Humphries how he had taken over the lease and re-opened the cinema in January this year with help from Mr Workman and the Cobar Enterprise Facilitation resource board.
“Mark helped me with lots of aspects of the business and through the resource board, he put me in touch with a cinema operator in Nowra who was extremely helpful when I was setting up,” Mr Schaefer said.
Mr Schaefer’s business plan for the cinema complex also includes a gaming arcade area which will provide additional income and help to keep the business viable.
“There’s a bit of work to be done, but I’m hoping the amusement machines will all be up and running in the next month or so,” he said.
Since opening, Mr Schaefer has formed community partnerships with the Cobar Arts Council, the Cobar Community Radio committee and the Cobar Youth Council and made the centre’s facilities available for use by the three groups for their meetings.
In addition, Mr Schaefer has offered the centre foyer area to the Arts Council to be used as a display space for art works.
“For a young person this is a terrific achievement,” Mr Humphries said.
“And great news for Enterprise Facilitation.”
Mr Humphries is now keen to show other towns in his electorate the Cobar cinema model and how it came about by a community working together.
