Wednesday January 29, 2009

Cobar Bowling and Golf Club’s new extensions and renovations were officially opened on Monday with the club’s longest serving board member and past president, Max Humphries, given the honour of cutting the ribbon at the event. Mr Humphries said he was invited to join the club when he came to Cobar in 1963. He has been a member for 45 years and served on the board for 35 years, 28 of those years as the club’s
president. Mr Humphries recalls in 1963 the clubhouse was “an old weatherboard cottage” and the stony golf fairways were nicknamed ‘the goat track’. “We’ve come a long way since then,” he said. Mr Humphries is pictured above at the new bar named in his honour with the club’s secretary/manager Neil Urquhart, club president Jim Goonrey and site manager Kim Harvey, (New England Construction).
