A new face enters the field of local horse racing

Wednesday January 29, 2009

New race club committee
A new executive of the Cobar Miners’ Race Club was elected at the club’s annual general meeting at the Services Club on Sunday morning. Returning to the committee is Vince Sikora (vice president) and Robert Cownie (president) along with a new club member Tess Lloyd who has taken on the position of treasurer. They are pictured at the meeting with general committee members John Fox and Ron Beck.

A new face has entered the field of local horse racing with Tess Lloyd elected as the Cobar Miners’ Race Club treasurer at the club’s annual general meeting on Sunday at the Services Club.

Mrs Lloyd was keen to see horse racing go ahead in Cobar and has volunteered her services to the club as treasurer.

The Cobar Miners’ Race Club has struggled for a number of years trying to get volunteers to help prepare and run annual horse racing events in Cobar.

Last year the club was not able to hold a race meeting due to the track being damaged by storm water.

Past club secretary Maree Ellicott said the club was forced to go into recession for one year but could not afford to cancel a second year of racing at the risk of losing horse racing in Cobar for good.

“We need more helpers,” Mrs Ellicott said at Sunday’s meeting.

While most of the executive positions were filled at Sunday’s AGM, the key position of secretary was not and has been advertised as vacant. Mrs Ellicott agreed to act as the club’s secretary for the interim period.

“There’s lots of people out there who love going to the races, including lots of young people and it would be great if they could put their hands up to get involved,” she said.
