Possibly the biggest crowd ever turned out to watch the ANZAC march through Cobar’s streets on Saturday morning.

While the numbers of returned servicemen and women marching in Cobar on ANZAC Day may be dwindling, there can be some compensation in the number of spectators who lined the street for this year’s march.

The crowd was potentially one of the biggest ever in Cobar for the ANZAC march.

Commander Michael Moore from the Royal Australian Navy based in Sydney led this year’s march which commemorated the 94th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.

Marchers included returned service personnel, current serving personnel, local members of the State Emergency Service, the NSW and Rural fire brigades, police, NSW Ambulance and St John Ambulance, the three schools, Cobar Pony Club, along with members of the scouts, cubs, guides and a contingent of Cobar Junior Rugby League players.

In his address Commander Moore paid tribute to all those Australians who have served in past wars and those who continue to serve in wars in eight locations around the world.

He also paid particular tribute to Cobar’s war hero, Robert ‘Oscar’ Rankin.

“We must cherish the memory of each and every one of them.

“Their loss is our loss,” Commander Moore said.

“They died so that we may live in a democratic country.

“We should never lose sight of the sacrifices made by those in the past.”

Mayor Lilliane Brady said ANZAC Day was a day for reflection and remembrance.

She said it was a day to remember Australians who had lost their lives in all wars and it was also a day to remember those servicemen and women who were prisoners of war and those whose lives were shortened by war.

“We live in a free country due largely to the ANZAC’s efforts and other theatres of war,” she said.
