Funding eases sporting travel costs

Wednesday April 29, 2009

A number of sporting teams and individuals across Barwon, including several from Cobar, have been given a funding boost with the announcement of the Far West Travel Scheme grant recipients.

With a total value of $27,660 allocated for Barwon, local State member, Kevin Humphries said the funding would greatly assist some of NSW’s most remote clubs and sports people.

Successful Cobar clubs and athletes were: Cobar Athletics Club Inc, $1,200; Cobar Junior Cricket Association, $1,200; Cobar Lady Golfers, $1,200; Cobar Swimming Club, $700 and Georgia Baker (swimming) $500.

Mr Humphries said the purpose of the scheme was to assist clubs, associations and individuals in the remote west of NSW meet the high cost of travel associated with participation in sporting competition.

“There is a great amount of money and commitment needed from our Western clubs and individuals pursuing their passion – the cost of travelling to compete at events is one of the greatest challenges for local sportspeople so this funding is very welcomed,” he said.

Mr Humphries encourages Barwon sporting groups and individuals to apply for the next round of funding through the Department of Sport and Recreation to help ease their travel costs.—contributed
