Cobar junior golfer, 12 year old Jacob Ryan, has capped off an outstanding month on the course by winning Cobar Men’s Golf’s prestigious Kelly Cup on Saturday from a field of 25 players.

He also finished first in the second round of the Captain’s Trophy Day, which was held in conjunction with the Kelly Cup.

Ryan shot a fantastic score of 64 net which resulted in him reducing his handicap.

The victory follows on from a successful month of golf for Ryan which began with his selection in the Western Region Junior Pennants side which played in Dubbo on March 28 and 29.

He travelled to Cowra on the March 30 to compete in the Cowra Junior Classic, where he played two shots above his handicap, a great effort on grass greens (after playing mostly on sandgreens).

On April 4 and 5 Ryan participated in the Bathurst Junior Masters where his limited experience on grass greens meant he found the greens “very tricky”.

Ryan said he enjoyed the experience of playing on such an “extremely challenging” course alongside top players from all over NSW.

Just two weeks later Ryan won the Warren Junior Classic, qualifying him for the Jack Newton Junior Golf Age Championship to be played later this year.

Last weekend, Ryan and partner Geoff McGuinness were the Saturday Net event winners in the NSW Sandgreen Championships, played in Bourke.

McGuinness spoke highly of Ryan’s ability and the talent and said at 12 years of age, the best is yet to come from this extremely talented young boy.

Ryan travelled to Mudgee last Tuesday to participate in the Mudgee Junior Jack Classic, where he qualified to play in the finals of the Junior Jack Classic to be held later this year.

The talented young golfer is on track to follow in the footsteps of his mother Suzanne Ryan (former NSW State Golfer who captained NSW to an Australian National Title).—contributed
