Cobar Shire councillors last Thursday afternoon took a first hand look at the work needed to bring Cobar Cinema up to a standard where it can be opened.
Cobar Shire Council will call for expressions of interest for the management of the Cobar Cinema before deciding the future direction of the building.
Councillors last Thursday took a first hand look at the facility to gain a better understanding of the works required to bring it to a working standard.
Council’s general manager Ray Smith said the biggest issue in the cinema which required immediate attention was curtains.
“All the curtains in the building need to be taken down, sent off to Adelaide and made fire retardant.
“It is a huge job,” Mr Smith said.
Councillors last month allocated $20,000 towards works to bring the cinema to a standard which meets minimum operating requirements.
“At the moment the stage also doesn’t comply with regulations for live entertainment.
“What council decides to do with that really depends on what comes back from the expressions of interest,” Mr Smith said.
He said council has not ruled out further works in the long term, including a complete redevelopment of the facility.
“The highest priority at the moment is to get the doors open,” Mr Smith said.
