Police figures to raise awareness of violence

Wednesday October 29, 2008

Cobar Police have released domestic violence figures in an effort to raise community awareness of the issue.

Senior Constable Adam Gibson said police have received 12 reports of domestic violence incidents this month, with charges laid on three occasions.

“Eight of those incidents were alcohol related,” he said.

Cobar residents who are victims of domestic violence have a number of support options available, including a local domestic violence committee.

“There is also a domestic violence liaison officer stationed at Bourke who can provide support and assistance, and counselling is available locally,” Senior Constable Gibson said.

“The local committee can also refer you to other agencies.”

Figures released by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show Cobar has previously been listed among the Local Government Areas with a high incidence of domestic violence related crimes.

Senior Constable Gibson said many community members are not aware of the domestic violence issues in Cobar.
