Contrast in games

Wednesday October 29, 2008

Two very contrasting games of cricket were played at the weekend with Nymagee and RSL slugging it out for the full 100 overs at Nymagee while the Colts and Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 game was over before anyone could raise a sweat.

Batting on his favourite ground at Nymagee where he gets true value for shots and doesn’t have to run too many quick singles, Craig Dillon had a let-off when he was on 30 and went on to make 177, the highest individual score in Cobar cricket in 10 years.

Dillon and Jade Buckman made RSL toil for 37 overs before the first wicket fell at 193 when Buckman was dismissed for 61.

Doug North, Phil Harley and Mathew Nicholson all hit out to see Nymagee through to a massive total of 4/352.

In these hostile bowling conditions it’s tough for any bowler, let alone a 14 year-old, yet RSL’s Wade Potter stuck to his guns and picked up two wickets. Scott Brown and Shane Munro were the other wicket-takers.

Needing 353 to win, RSL openers Brown and new player to town, Peter Neale, gave RSL the perfect start by giving Nymagee some of their own medicine, adding 191 for the first wicket in 36 overs.

Unfortunately for RSL they were unable to keep up the pace for the full 50 overs and finished the innings at 5/272.

Brown batted for 50 overs and remained unconquered on 106. Neale made 70 and Geoff Potter 51.

The Nymagee bowlers didn’t fare much better than RSL, however the match went in Nymagee’s favour.

Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 came back to earth with a big thud on Saturday after their encouraging win over Golf Club the previous week.

They were bundled out for just 21 in 16 overs.

Sundries top-scored with six as Colts’ bowlers Mal Hillier (5/4) and Stewart Fraser (3/7) went through the early batsmen.

Slade Neale chipped in with 2/5.

Murray Robotham and Daniel Howard scored Colts’ required runs to put Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 out of their misery in only two overs.

This Saturday Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 will hope to regain their composure when the play RSL on No.1 Oval. Golf Club play Colts and Nymagee has the bye.

Cobar will play their first NSW Country Plate match this Sunday.

They will be up against Walgett who defeated Gilgandra on the weekend.

The Cobar team is: Phil Harley (captain), Craig Dillon, Tom Good, Peter Neale, Stewart Fraser, Jake Harbison, Doug North, Damien Harbison, Mathew Nicholson, Steve Nicholson, Mal Hillier and Jade Buckman.—Wisden
