Twelve local juniors join FWAS

Wednesday October 29, 2008

Twelve of Cobar’s talented young athletes have been selected to join the Far West Academy of Sport’s 2008/2009 programmes, with cricketer and footballer, Wade Potter offered positions in both sports.

Potter is one of seven rugby league players selected in the Country Rugby League Academy and Development squads.

Joining him in the development squad are David Watson, Khaleb Whitehurst, Macauley Dawson and Jim Delboux while Raymond Ebsworth and Zacc Douglas will feature in the 2008/09 Academy squad line up.

Potter will pursue his cricket interest through the FWAS Lone Star programme.

Other Cobar Lone Star recipients are: Georgia Baker (Swimming); Nicola Harbison (Cricket) and Robert Newey (Basketball).

Lone Star athletes receive financial assistance from the academy to attend selected activities within their sport as part of their regional representative programmes.

The academy covers some entry fees for athletes and helps to offset travel costs to compete at higher representation levels in their chosen sport.

Athletes are contacted on a monthly basis to help with the programme’s planning and their training schedules.

Throughout the 12 months of the Lone Star programme, athletes are expected to attend sports development lectures on nutrition, sports psychology, working with the media and undergo full fitness assessments.

Junior golfers Jeb Bishop and Jacob Ryan have been included in the 2008/09 golf squad which is supported by the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation.

Through the programme athletes will receive some financial assistance to help them to travel to junior competitions in and outside of the far west region.

Athletes will also have the opportunity to attend regular golf sessions with Craig Meares Western Junior Promotions Officer, which have been funded by the Western District Golf Association.

FWAS Development Officer Matthew Thompson said the 2008/09 Lone Star, golf and rugby league programmes have some very talented athletes.

“I am very much looking forward to working with these athletes in the future,” Mr Thompson said.
