New era for War Memorial Hostel as mortgage discharged

Wednesday September 30, 2009

Long time advocate for the Cobar War Memorial Hostel, Joe Bourke, with the assistance of Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries and the Department of Education, has helped to bring about the discharge of the remaining mortgage on the hostel.

The discharge amount was $9,754 and Mr Humphries was in Cobar on Monday to hand over the Certificates of Title to the hostel committee for safe keeping.

The hostel accommodates children from Kinder to Year 12 and is one of the last remaining hostels of its kind in the state.

For more than 50 years it has been assisting families from isolated properties in providing a home away from home allowing children to attend schools in Cobar.

Mr Humphries said it was up to the Cobar community to make the best of this facility.

“This has been difficult during a time when rural families have been under pressure and in some cases forced to relocate.

“The value of this project is securing the infrastructure for the future so that families have options for schooling in town,” Mr Humphries said.

“Cobar has always maintained a good reputation when it comes to educational outcomes.”
