August 2009

The Cobar Weekly and Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre’s three Young Achievers for August: Rebekkah and Jaymee Manns, who were nominated by Paula Potter; Tom Shanahan, who was nominated by Margaret Settree.
The Cobar Weekly and Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre has this month awarded three Young Achievers who have all made significant volunteer contributions to the community.
Sisters, 15 year old Jaymee and 12 year old Rebekkah Manns, and 14 year old Tom Shanahan have all been named The Cobar Weekly and Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre’s Young Achiever of the Month for August.
Jaymee and Rebekkah both volunteer their time to help the local Girls Guides group.
The pair were nominated for the
Young Achiever award by Paula Potter, whose young daughter is a member of the guides.
“Both girls work tirelessly with the younger girls involved,” Mrs Potter said in her nomination.
“This year there are 23 guides and Jaymee and Rebekkah assist the guide leaders.
Rebekkah is a Girl Guide while Jaymee is a Lone Venturer.
“They both help out every week and are wonderful with the younger girls.
“They always turn up with a smile and
the younger girls adore them,” Mrs Potter said.
“They help make the Tuesday afternoon Girl Guide meetings a happy and fun time!”
Also receiving an August Young Achiever award was Tom Shanahan.
Tom was nominated for the award by
Margaret Settree and Kathy Cahill for his involvement in the Anastasia stage production.
“He did a fantastic job,” his nomination read.
Tom received many acclamations from the Anastasia cast, fellow crew members and the public for his lighting work.
Many were astounded that a 14 year old could do such a complex job.
“Tom was responsible for the purchase, organisation and operation of the electronics, lighting and computer imagery for ‘Anastasia’.
“He has also given his time, energy and expertise on many other occasions in the past for other community functions,” Mrs Settee said in her nomination.
